Overview

The District of Bajali is located in the western part of Assam is a newly created district of Assam vide government notification no GAG (B) 491/2019/107 dated 12th January 2021. It is bounded on the North by the Baksa District, on the East by the Nalbari District and West & South by the Barpeta District. This district (erst while a sub division) was carved out of the Barpeta District. Bajali district occupies an area of 422.95 square kilometres (163.30 sq. mi), comparatively equivalent to the country of Barbados.

October to January. During this period the weather becomes pleasant and the atmosphere gets foggy.

How to reach:

By Road: There is very good availability of buses plying from Guwahati, Nalbari, Dhubri, Bongaigaon etc. to Bajali. There is flexibility of timings. Plenty of buses travel between Guwahati and Bajali. The district lies about 113.2 Kms via NH 27 from state capital with an average travel time of 2 hours. Taxies are available also for hire from all major destinations to Bajali.

By Train: The District Head Quarter is directly connected by Pathsala Railway Station. All the up bound and down bound train services touch Pathsala station. It takes around 2 hours to reach Pathsala from Guwahati by train.

By Air: The nearest airport is the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), Borjhar Guwahti located at a distance of around 96 Km. The Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati has a good flight connectivity with all major destinations throughout the country.

Weather: The climate of the district is characterized by excessive humidity during summer and moderately cold and foggy winters. Generally, the weather goes dry and moisture less from February to April. From May to September sufficient rainfall sweeps over the district with heavy moisture in the atmosphere. During the months of October and November, the weather becomes pleasant and the atmosphere gets foggy. Fogginess remains in the atmosphere till the end of January. Winter starts in the month of November and continues for about four months. The climate / atmosphere is somewhat dry and dusty during the months of February and March.

History:

The Bajali district is a newly created district of Assam vide Government Notification No GAG (B) 491/2019/107 dated 12th January 2021. Prior to that, it was a Civil Sub Division of Barpeta District which was created in the year 1989.

Did you know?

There is a famous Banyan tree, believed to be 208 years old, which is one of the oldest living banyan trees in India. The banyan tree is spread over four bighas of land and people believe it also as the largest tree in the Asian sub-continent on the bank of Kaldia River at Jalikata. This spot has become an attraction for nature lovers, students and spiritual people who throng the area throughout the year.

Rani Phuleswari, the queen of Siva Singha installed an image of goddess Durga Parithareswar Devalaya and introduced the system of worship of the Goddess through Devadasi dance. There is a legend that Queen Fuleswari, wife of Shiva Singha, was instrumental in bringing "Devadasis" or Temple dancers from Upper Assam to perform dances for amusement of the deities of this Temple. The famous dance form "Devadasi-Nritya" is said to have originated in this Temple.
